Indian Fashion goes International with Anamika Khanna

anamika khannaAnamika Khanna is a well known name in the fashion fraternity. Without any sort of formal training in designing, she jumped into the limelight when she won the Damania Fashion awards. Since then the versatile nature of her work has firmly kept her in the midst of that spotlight.

Anamika Khanna’s work consists of two lines, her Prêt line and her Couture line. The strong points of her designs are the interplay of color and craft with emphasis being on trousseau wear. Most of her designer wear is influenced by global designs blended with ethnic Indian crafts. Anamika Khanna’s prêt line consists of quirky outfits which take the concept of tendy to entirely new levels. The harmonious blend of eastern and western wear has made her popular worldwide and she boasts of an impressive clientele from Spain, UK, USA, Thailand, Japan, Dubai etc.

Anamika Khanna’s demand has escalated significantly over the last few years which in turn has led her to retail from several outlets. Some of her retailers include at Carma (New Delhi), Ogaan (New Delhi & Kolkata), Ensemble (Mumbai & New Delhi), Espee (Kolkata), Ffolio (Bangalore and Chennai), Kimaya, and Elahe. Her signature outlet however, is based in Kolkata and is a defining landmark in terms of style. Anamika Khanna’s most recent work is the launch of her international label ‘Ana Mika Boho’ which will make its debut in UK.

Anamika’s designs showcase an excellent understanding of silhouettes and use of fabrics. Each individual piece is treated innovatively to give a unique look. Patchwork antique brocades, tanchois, silks, shot silk and various other fabrics are used for tailoring kurtas, blouses, jackets, tops, corsets and even pajams, skirts and such items.

Anamika Khanna has also created garments based on Indian textile craft and merged it with a bold style. The collections were ornamented with applique and kantha work on block prints on net, muslins and cottons. One of her revolutionary designs included leg warmers paired with wrapped tops and topped with webbing straps. The collection was both refreshing and sexy.

Textured clothes and vivid colors are her signature. The outfits are comfortable and yet exude sensuality. The major feather in Anamika Khanna’s hat was the overwhelming response to her wacky designer wear at the Lakme India Fashion Week Grand Finale in 2004. The success of that event was of a magnitude not seen before in the country. Close on the heels of that event came her success at the London Fashion Week in 2005. Khanna’s design at the London Fashion Week created a furore in Europe. British retail giant Harrod’s offered her an exclusive contract based on her creative demand at the London Fashion Week.

The contract with Harrods sealed her fate as a designer of name as well as fame in India. Her success story is an inspiration to aspiring designers worldwide.
