On Memorial Day the people in Unites States remember people who died while serving the country’s served forces. This day is observed every year on the last Monday in May. It originated as Decoration Day in 1868 after the American Civil War. People visit memorials and cemeteries and volunteers place flags on each grave. Graves are decorated with flowers and wreaths. The three day weekend is more than blockbusters, barbeques and the beach.

Celebrate freedom
Memorial Day is officially the start of summer. The biggest Memorial Day tradition is for the Vice President or the President to give a speech or lay a wreath on the grave of soldier’s in the national war cemetery. The U.S. Flag is flown at half-staff till noon. Americans visit monuments which are dedicated to sailors, marines and soldiers. Parades are also held in most cities.

Activities you can take part in
There are several things which you can do to celebrate Memorial Day. Take advantage of the weekend and relax with your friends. Decorate your home and lawn with stripes and stars. Another tradition which you can follow is flying the flag at half-staff from dawn till the noon local time.

As Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the fallen soldiers, it is the right time to thank soldiers past and present who are right in your midst. Thank the veterans for all that they have done to protect the country. It is a good idea to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3P.M. local time. For the National Moment of Remembrance the time 3p.m. was chosen as most Americans enjoy a holiday on this day.

Honor the veterans
The simplest thing you can do to honor this holiday is to spend time with your children explaining to them what the true meaning of Memorial Day is. Talk about those who have laid their lives and sacrificed for the country.

You can keep the spirit alive by taking your children along with you as you distribute cookies and books in a nearby veteran’s hospital. If you cannot go to the Memorial Day parade watch it on television. It is also a good idea to watch a movie and learn about the battles which were fought in the past.
