Which Saree should I wear on my Wedding Day?

wedding day sarees bridal sareesFor a bride, Wedding Day is the most precious day and to make it more memorable it is necessary that you choose the best saree. Irrespective of the figure, height and looks, sarees can make you look exceptionally gorgeous. This is a day every bride wants to look her best and so picking up the right bridal saree becomes quite pivotal, as you will cherish this saree forever. Among the wide diversity of Indian Wedding Sarees, when you select your bridal wear, you have to consider certain aspects, like Fabric, Color, Draping Style etc. Let us take you through our guide:

The Wedding Fabric

The most customary type of bridal sarees is the silk sarees, which are available in different parts of India with their special types of embroidery and laces. The most popular silk sarees are Pure silk, Benaras Silk, Mysore silk, Kanchipuram, Orissa’s Ikat silk, Baluchari from Mushirabad, Gujarat’s Patola silk, Assam’s Muga sarees, Bandhani from Rajasthan, Paithani from Maharashtra, Pochampally from Andhra and Tamil Nadu’s Tanjore and Dharmavaram silk sarees.

bridal sarees wedding sareesAs a bride, you must select a saree that is not too heavy for you, as you need to be capable of carrying it the whole evening. It is best to get a heavy saree for the night ceremony and for the rest of the ceremonies of the day and the reception; you can go for something light. Other than the silk material, you can go for the Kashmiri embroidered bridal sarees, light synthetic tissue silks, creative Rajasthani bridals, Italian crepes and georgette. The tissue silks are cheap, light and easy to maintain, and paired with kundan, zari, zardosi and sequins they look quite splendid. The nylon or polyester made georgette are also light and can find a place in your wedding wardrobe for the additional ceremonies.

The Wedding Color

Traditionally red or maroon are the colors for an Indian bride, however, times are changing and a shift in bride’s preference to the shades of pink, peacock, golden yellow, green, yellow and other combinations are being noticed. The colors must be chosen keeping the complexion of the bride in mind as dark colors are good for fair-skinned brides and bright colors are the right choice for dusky brides.

The Saree Draping Style

There are various styles of draping a saree following the bride’s particular state of origin. Nonetheless, the most predominant style of draping is the North Indian style, where you make a “seedha pallu” bringing the free end of the saree in the front to display the intricate work of the pallu, and the South Indian Style, where you can do a left side opening of your pallu.

The Design

For a bride, it is essential to wear a nicely designed saree on her wedding day. Synthetic fabric is good to have gorgeous embroidery with zari, mirror, pearl, organza, patchwork, zardosi, sequins etc. Expensive fabric like silk, self laced simple designs look graceful. Even the south silk sarees are good but expensive choices as pure gold threads are used in them.

The Saree Blouse

Generally the bridal sarees come with dress material for the blouses, but if you have to take a separate blouse you have to get the perfect match in color of the saree or a color contrasting to the sari but matching the border maybe. You can further give matching neck and arm cuts for the blouse.

Some of the precious stones that have gone into the saree are ruby, emerald, gold, diamond sapphire, silver, cat’s eye, yellow sapphire, coral, pearl and platinum. These have been used to beautify the women attributes in the paintings which are carefully hand woven into the saree in convoluted patterns.
